Plastics Added to Canada’s Toxics List in Step Toward Final Ban

Canada has put plastics on a list of toxic substances as it moves toward banning products like grocery bags, straws and food packaging made for one-time use only—an approach that’s been lambasted by the products’ makers.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has added “plastic manufactured items” to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which allows him to launch restrictions to manage plastic pollution, according to a regulatory order published Wednesday.
