PFAS-Free Fire Suppressant Requirements Released by Pentagon

The requirements PFAS-free firefighting foams must meet and the process manufacturers must use to have their foams approved for sale to the military were released by the Pentagon on Thursday.

The fire suppressants covered by the standard would be made without intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to extinguish jet fuel and other liquid fires on land.

By law the Pentagon must require that the new suppressants can contain no more than 1 part per billion PFAS. The law allowed some PFAS because the chemicals are used so ubiquitously that a small amount might unintentionally get into the new, ...
