Safe for Salmon and Environment? Alaskans Scrutinize Mine Review

Alaskans are in the middle of a debate over whether the open-pit Pebble Mine could coexist with environmental protection in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, the home of native people, commercial fishermen, and an abundance of salmon.

“I chase thriving, wild salmon runs to see how they tick,” ecologist Sarah O’Neal said at an April 16 public hearing in Anchorage held by the Army Corps of Engineers on its draft environmental impact statement on the proposed gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum mine in southwestern Alaska.
