Paper Mill Owners Sued Over Potomac ‘Black Liquor’ Pollution (1)

Toxic “black liquor” is seeping from Verso Corp.'s now-shuttered paper mill into the Potomac River in violation of federal law, an environmental group says in a new lawsuit filed in Maryland federal court.

The improper handling or disposal of the waste poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Potomac Riverkeeper Inc. says in its lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
