Order Allowing California Logging to Proceed Reversed in Part

It was premature to allow logging in national forests in California to proceed while environmental groups argued the federal government lacked data on the current population of a protected weasel, the Ninth Circuit ruled in a partial reversal of a lower court’s decision.

Unite the Parks, Sequoia Forestkeeper, and Earth Island Institute wanted the court to block 31 of 45 proposed projects in the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests. The Fish and Wildlife Service violated the Endangered Species Act by not using certain post-wildfire data to estimate the current Sierra Nevada fisher population, the groups argued.
