Ontario Utility Eyes Nuclear Waste Project on Lake Huron

Ontario Power Generation rejected alternatives to its plan to create a storage facility for low- and medium-levels of radioactive wastes on the shore of Lake Huron.

The Canadian government now will decide, after reviewing public comment, whether to support the provincial electrical utility’s new report and letter concluding that there are no viable alternatives to its proposed siting of the storage facility at its Bruce Nuclear facility.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which is overseeing the project’s review, announced Jan. 18 the public consultation and set a deadline of Feb. 18 for comments on the utility’s proposal.
