Ontario to Buy Hydro From Quebec to Reduce Climate Gases

Ontario will buy hydroelectricity from Quebec to help limit its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new agreement between the two provinces.

The new agreement commits Quebec to selling Ontario 14 terawatt-hours of power, starting in December through 2023, during periods when it would be generated from natural gas-fired plants, reducing Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions by 1 million metric tons annually, the provinces said Oct. 21.

Ontario also will take advantage of Quebec’s capacity to store energy by transmitting up to 500 megawatts of electricity to Quebec’s reservoirs during off-peak periods and withdrawing it during peak periods to offset natural ...
