Oklahoma Coal Ash Disposal Program Faces Renewed Challenge

Oklahoma’s coal ash disposal program is again being challenged by environmental groups who said that the Environmental Protection Agency approved it without proper notice and comment and that it allows “permits for life,” according to a notice of appeal filed in a Washington federal court.

Oklahoma’s program was the first to get EPA approval for the disposal of coal ash, in 2018. Coal ash is the waste produced by coal-fired power plants, and most of it is shipped to landfills or surface impoundments.
