Ohio Removes Bird-Protection Limitation on Freshwater Wind Farm

Ohio regulators have removed a restriction on a Lake Erie wind farm that would have stopped the six turbines from running at night, a defeat for bird advocates.

The first planned freshwater wind farm development in North America, known as Icebreaker Wind, received a certificate of construction in May that feathered, or locked in place, the 20.7-megawatt project from dusk to dawn in spring, summer and fall. The Ohio Power Siting Board removed that restriction Thursday while maintaining other bird and bat death mitigation requirements.
