Nuclear Waste Storage Plan Faces ‘Grave Concerns’ in New Mexico

New Mexico officials are blasting a preliminary federal recommendation to license Holtec International’s proposed nuclear waste storage project in the state.

The state has “grave concerns” about a Nuclear Regulatory Commission analysis that failed to consider geological, environmental justice, and other issues, according to the New Mexico Environment Department cabinet secretary, James Kenney.

  • Comments on the commission’s draft environmental impact statement were due Tuesday.

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) also told the commission in a letter that it failed to consider “significant environmental and economic concerns” of the proposal, such as risks to New Mexico’s prolific oil and gas region. ...
