Nuclear Regulator to Finish Reviews for Interim Sites Next Year

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is on pace to complete its review of two interim nuclear waste storage facilities—one in New Mexico, the other in Texas—by the “middle of 2020,” NRC Chairman Kristine Svinicki told senators May 1.

Holtec International Corp. has submitted a plan for temporarily storing up up to 120,000 metric tons of spent fuel from commercial nuclear reactors in southeastern New Mexico.

Backers of the New Mexico site are confident it can be operated safely, but local groups and elected officials have protested, citing transportation risks and the potential for accidents at the site.
