NRG Fears ‘Hunger Games’ For Gas Plants in California

Environmental policies to cut carbon emissions and a surge in renewable energy could force natural-gas generators out of California’s state electricity market, the largest U.S. independent power producer said.

“We are headed down the road to some sort of gas Hunger Games,” Brian Theaker, director of market affairs at NRG Energy Inc., said Nov. 17 in San Francisco at the S&P Global Platts Western States Power and Gas Conference. The Princeton, N.J.-based company owns about 2,000 megawatts of gas plants in California.
