North Carolina Shrimp Trawlers Avoid Fish Dumping Lawsuit

Shrimp trawlers in North Carolina can avoid a lawsuit by environmental groups who said their releases of accidentally caught fish and net dragging activities pollute local waters, a federal court in the state ruled.

The North Carolina Coastal Fisheries Reform Group and multiple individuals argued shrimp trawling equipment is disturbing, removing, and re-depositing sediment in violation of the Clean Water Act. But their complaint says the sediment remains in the water, according to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
