New Mexico regulators are looking at restricting oil and gas emissions of methane as the industry faces low prices and low demand, due in part to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ambitious Goal: The state’s methane rules would be less hands-on than other states’ when it comes to how companies reduce emissions, said Joseph Schremmer, a University of New Mexico School of Law assistant professor who focuses on oil and gas. But the end goal of 98% natural gas capture, among other restrictions, is also “probably more ambitious” than those states’, he said.
