New Law Complicates Rooftop Solar in Sun-Drenched Chile

Rooftop solar power will struggle to gain more traction in sunny Chile because of new limits on how much electricity homeowners and businesses can sell back to the grid, panel installers said.

According to modifications to Chile’s “net billing” law (No. 20,571) published in the official gazette Diario Oficial Nov. 17, only households with relatively small electricity generation systems systems—those with a generating capacity of less than 20 kilowatts—could sell surplus electricity back to the grid. Previously, the law allowed homes or businesses with systems as large as 100 kilowatts of generation capacity to sell into the grid.
