New Guidance Shrinks Where Air Pollution Monitors Mandated

A “No Trespassing” sign would be enough for a large industrial company to avoid monitoring air quality on its own property under updated guidance the EPA released on Dec. 3.

In the revision to a 39-year-old guidance, the Environmental Protection Agency said measurement of air pollution increases due to new construction or expansion of industrial operations should be done only in places where the public has access. In some cases that could mean monitors would end up detecting lower levels of pollution because they would be placed farther away from the source.
