New Energy Rule Could Limit Future Appliance Standards (1)

The Energy Department is redefining what it means for appliances to be energy efficient under a new “process rule” finalized this week.

The rule, released Wednesday, is a slate of new procedures for how the Energy Department will create or update new energy conservation standards for appliances and some industrial equipment. The agency issued a draft of the rule last April.

Efficiency advocates say the rule will make it harder for future administrations to require appliances to save more energy.
