New Challenge Filed Over Keystone XL Pipeline Approval

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved significant parts of the construction of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline without evaluating the project’s impacts, several environmental groups say in a new suit.

The Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity, and other groups challenge the Corps’s use of a streamlined process to allow pipeline construction through most parts of the waterways along the route in Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska. They say the agency hasn’t adequately evaluated the project’s environmental impacts, in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act and the Clean Water Act.
