Nevada Seeks to Sideline Nuclear Official on Yucca Mountain Moves

Nevada wants a federal appeals court to force Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner David Wright (R) to recuse himself from the agency’s licensing proceedings on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

If Wright is forced to recuse himself, it could lead to a deadlock on the five-seat Nuclear Regulatory Commission if support for Yucca Mountain is split among the voting members. The commission is made up of three Republicans, one Democrat, and one independent.

The state of Nevada asked Wright in June to recuse himself, but he denied the request July 2. The state filed a petition
