A carbon floor price in the European Union’s emissions market can ensure a cheaper and smoother shift to clean energy, according to the Netherlands.
“Through that system we will come to a cost-effective transition without a burden for public finances,” Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Eric Wiebes told his EU counterparts on March 5. “I believe that there will only be support for the transition if we promote cost-effective measures and avoid level-playing-field issues between countries. No one will support climate measures if it hurts the wallet and destroys jobs,” he said.
