Nation’s Largest Oil, Gas Buffer Passed by Colorado Regulators

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission gave preliminary approval to an expanded 2,000-foot buffer zone around drilling sites, said to be the largest such setback for energy production in the U.S.

Commissioners on Monday approved the new setback, which is the minimum distance between drilling production sites and occupied buildings such as homes, schools, and child care facilities. The vote is binding, but the commission will take a final vote in November when it acts on a full set of new rules, Megan Castle, spokeswoman for the commission, said in an email.
