New York Extends Boat Washing Program to Fight Invasive Species

New York state lawmakers extended a voluntary boat washing program for another year, as they decide whether to make it permanent and mandatory in a bid to stop the spread of invasive species.

Fishermen, boaters, and others have struggled with invasive species like zebra mussels, which can clog water intake pipes, and spiny waterfleas, tiny zooplankton that hang on fishing lines. Asking people to clean off their boats, and providing cleaning stations, can help prevent the flora and fauna from spreading further.
