N.Y. Lawmakers Vote to Ban PFAS in Firefighting Foam, 1,4-Dioxane (1)

New York lawmakers voted to ban the use of potentially harmful chemicals in firefighting foam, household cleaning products, and cosmetics in an end-of-session push.

The state Assembly and Senate, working into the early morning hours of June 21, passed a host of environmental bills including a measure (A.445/S.439) that would prohibit the use of chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in firefighting foam and equipment.

PFAS chemicals, also used in nonstick coatings and some food packages, have caused contamination problems in drinking water supplies in cities and towns across the nation.
