Montana’s Spring Creek Coal Mine Needs More Environmental Review

The federal government failed to properly study the environmental impacts of coal transportation and greenhouse gas and other emissions when it approved Spring Creek Coal LLC’s mine expansion in Montana, a federal court in the state ruled.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Montana upheld a magistrate judge’s finding that the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement failed to take a hard look at the mine’s impacts as required under the National Environmental Policy Act.
