Monroe, N.J., thwarted BFI Waste Systems’ attempts to close and remediate a 86-acre landfill site, which it has spent more than $30 million to clean up, according to a new CERCLA complaint filed in federal court Friday.
The Township of Monroe is jointly responsible for the Superfund site, which has caused environmental deterioration in nearby neighborhoods from leachate—a contaminant that forms when rainwater filters through a landfill.
