A plan to build dikes, weirs, and other structures to control the Mississippi River can proceed after a federal judge in Illinois ruled the Army Corps of Engineers’ environmental review passed muster.
The ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois came as a loss for environmental groups that sued to block the construction of new river training structures. The National Wildlife Federation, American Rivers, and three other groups argued the Corps’ review focused on reducing costs at the expense of flood risks and environmental harm.
