Mining, Yes, but Interior Backs Off Sale of Grand Staircase Land

Mining, oil and gas leasing, grazing and recreational off-road vehicle use would be permitted on some 861,974 acres of public land President Donald Trump removed from the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument under new Bureau of Land Management plans.

But the Interior Department in recent days backtracked on plans for an outright sale of portions of the land.

The BLM said its preferred alternative for the former monument lands focuses on “maximizing resource use (e.g. right-of-way, minerals development, livestock grazing) while still providing for resource protections required by applicable regulations, laws, policies, plans and guidance.”
