Mexico’s Industrial Water Use Plan Raises Supply Concerns

Mexico’s plans to make some of its previously protected rivers and lakes available for industrial users have been sharply criticized by environmental groups concerned about leaving enough water available for domestic uses.

The government, however, said people will be guaranteed water for decades under the series of 10 presidential decrees.

One of 10 the decrees, issued June 6, lifts prohibitions on industrial withdrawals—for example for use in cooling, electricity generation, or oil and gas production—from 765 protected water bodies in Mexico while guaranteeing that 55 percent will be reserved for drinking water supply and other domestic uses.
