Merkel Evokes Nuclear-Era Payments to Support Wind Farms

Chancellor Angela Merkel is considering giving Germans a share of green power profit if they back new wind parks close to their homes, a tactic once used to sweeten homeowners with nuclear reactors in their backyard.

Speaking in the Baltic port of Stralsund on Monday, Merkel said she’s backing proposals aired last month by her Social Democrat allies to ease growing local resistance to new wind parks by compensating residents.
