Mattress Fires Linked to Fewer Deaths After Federal Standard

A federal flammability standard has successfully saved lives—a trend that should increase as more consumers replace old mattresses, the National Institute of Standards and Technology said Wednesday.

The finding is good news for mattress and chemical companies such as Koch Industries, Inc., the Olin Corp., and ICL North America Inc., which have manufactured chemicals such as boric acid, ammonium polyphosphate, and vinylidene chloride that mattress manufacturers can—but aren’t required to—use to meet the standard.
