Maine Lobstermen Seek High Court Help to Undo Fishing Rope Ban

The Maine Lobstering Union wants the Supreme Court to reverse an order reinstating a seasonal ban on the use of vertical buoy ropes, saying the “identity and heritage of the entire state hangs in the balance,” according to a filing submitted to Justice Stephen G. Breyer.

The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service’s ban, which is intended to prevent right whale entanglements, will act as a permanent closure to lobster fishing in the area, the emergency application for injunctive relief says. That’s because “virtually all fishermen only harvest its waters between October and January,” the filing says.
