Maine Lobstermen Challenge Right Whale Conservation Measures

The federal government’s new conservation measures for whales are “divorced from reality” and threaten the future of the Maine lobster fishery, a lobster fishing association says in its lawsuit filed Monday in a Washington, D.C., court.

The National Marine Fisheries Service “overestimated the risk posed by the Maine fishery while underestimating the risk from Canadian fisheries,” according to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The agency’s Biological Opinion issued in May also ignores data showing the potential of severe whale entanglements is greater for non-lobster gear, the lawsuit says.
