Judges Express Doubt About Interior’s Climate Change Claims

Federal appeals court judges March 23 sharply questioned arguments that the Trump administration’s coal leasing program should be allowed to keep running, with no pause for a study of its climate change implications.

If the Interior Department loses the case, it could have to pause its coal leasing program on federal lands and prepare a detailed analysis, known as a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS), of the effects mining and burning coal have on climate change.
