Interior Dept Pares Coal Reclamation Fees, Extends Mine Cleanup

The Interior Department lowered coal reclamation fees and extended an abandoned mine cleanup program after the bipartisan infrastructure law infused it with $11.3 billion in additional funding and authorized it for 13 more years.

  • Interior is paring reclamation fees under the program by 20%
    • Current rates are now 22.4 cents per ton (or 10% of the value, whichever is less) for non-lignite coal produced through surface mining, down from 28 cents; 9.6 cents per ton (or 10% of the value, whichever is less) for non-lignite coal produced from underground mines, down from 12 cents; and 6.4 cents per ton (or ...
