EU countries shouldn’t delay energy taxation reform in the face of rising inflation and energy supply problems, the bloc’s top tax official said Monday.
It would be a “big mistake” if countries reacted to rising energy prices by putting “in a drawer” a proposal to update the 2003 EU Energy Taxation Directive (2003/96/EC), Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni told the European Parliament’s tax subcommittee. Member countries should also press ahead with windfall taxes on energy companies, he said.
