India Anti-Pollution Effort Faces Obstacles, Ex-Official Says

India is making a new effort to crack down on polluting industries, but an ex-government scientist says enforcement will be difficult because many industries are government-owned and perform essential services.

The National Green Tribunal said chemical and fertilizer companies, distilleries and refineries are among the highly polluting activities that will be shut down within the next three months if they operate in areas found to be severely or critically polluted. The tribunal provides a specialized forum for addressing environmental protection cases.
