Holtec Nuclear Waste Storage Plan Has Limited Impacts: Regulator (1)

Federal nuclear regulators are giving a preliminary green light to license a commercial nuclear waste storage facility in southeastern New Mexico based on an analysis of its environmental impacts.

A draft environmental impact statement released Tuesday by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission found Holtec International’s plan for the project would have limited impacts, which allows regulators to grant it a license. The company wants to build and operate an interim site to store nuclear waste from power plants before the U.S. opens a permanent place to dispose of it.
