Global Hazardous Waste Export Ban to Take Effect By Year’s End

Environmentalists are hoping that a new international ban on exports of hazardous waste will put pressure on the U.S. and other OECD countries not to use developing areas of the world as their “dumping grounds.”

On Sept. 6, Croatia became the 97th country to ratify an amendment to the Basel Convention on cross-border movement of hazardous waste, a United Nations-affiliated agreement that prohibits Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries from exporting hazardous waste to the non-OECD countries. The move gives the amendment the three-fourths majority it needs to become law in December.
