Germany may have received top marks in food sustainability during the past year, but insiders say the enduring love of bratwurst, schnitzel, and other meat-heavy dishes will prevent the country from significantly reducing food waste—or greenhouse gases—anytime soon.
“Although Germans base their diets around meat, they know that a meat-heavy lifestyle isn’t healthy and that it does impact the environment,” Lucia Reisch, a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development, which advises the government, told Bloomberg Environment. “It’s almost like a cultural contradiction.”
