Gas Demand Recovery in Europe Just a Symptom of Coal Switch

European natural gas use recovered in June to the same level a year ago after slumping at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the increase in demand is being driven more from Europe’s ongoing shift away from coal to cleaner gas and renewables rather than a return to growth, according to Gergely Molnar, an energy analyst at the International Energy Agency. French nuclear output is also the lowest since at least 2011 due to Covid-19.
