Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Owner Avoids U.S. Sailors’ Suit

Tort claims by U.S. sailors against the owner of the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, claiming the plant’s reactor, which was damaged in a 2011 tsunami, was negligently designed and maintained, were dismissed by the U.S. District Court for the District of Southern California Jan. 5.

The plaintiffs failed to show that the court had specific jurisdiction over the claims, Judge Janis L. Sammartino said.

The plaintiffs were part of the U.S. strike force assigned to help cleanup after the tsunami. They claimed the reactor released radioisotopes and exposed them to injurious levels of radiation during their mission and sued FNPP’s...
