Fujian Donggang Petrochemical Spill 10 Times Larger Than Reported

A chemical leak into coastal waters of China’s southern province of Fujian is almost 10 times larger than originally reported because the company involved in the incident covered up the extent of the spill, according to authorities.

Fujian Donggang Petrochemical Industry Co. Ltd.—the operator of the port chemical facilities—originally reported that 6.97 metric tons of the aromatic hydrocarbon solvent C9, which is used as a solvent in paint and rubber products, leaked during a transfer into the Ningbo-Tiantong No. 1 tanker Nov. 3.
