Former Judge in Ecuador Admits to Bribes
To Make Sure Plaintiffs Prevailed in Litigation

A former judge in Ecuador now claims he and another judge were bribed by the plaintiffs and their attorneys in a case that led to an $18.2 billion judgment against Chevron Corp. over pollution from oil and gas operations in the Amazon (Chevron Corp. v. Donziger).

Former judge Alberto Guerra Bastidas filed a statement in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York claiming that he was paid thousands of dollars by attorney Steven Donziger and others to make sure that the Ecuadorans won the lawsuit brought by indigenous plaintiffs.
