Fewer Appliance Efficiency Upgrades Likely Under Energy Proposal

Appliance manufacturers like General Electric Co. and Whirlpool Corp. may not have to update their products as often to meet new energy efficiency standards, under sweeping changes proposed to a 40-year-old program.

The Energy Department proposal was applauded by appliance manufacturers because it would allow them to potentially make fewer energy efficiency upgrades to products. That, however, would make it harder to issue stronger efficiency standards, advocacy groups said.
