Feds Must Face $38 Million Claim Over Dakota Access Protests

North Dakota suffered a legal injury when it spent about $38 million in its response to the Dakota Access pipeline protests, and its claim for damages can therefore proceed, a judge ruled in a loss for the federal government.

The state spent a “significant amount of money” responding to the “failure of the United States to insist on safeguards required in its own rules,” according to the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota.
