Federal Court Finds Maui County Guilty
Of Discharging Wastewater Without Permit

A federal district court ruled in favor of environmental groups by finding Maui County in Hawaii guilty of violating the Clean Water Act by illegally discharging wastewater into the ocean through groundwater injection wells (Hawaii Wildlife Fund v. Cnty. of Maui).

Judge Susan Oki Mollway of the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii said Maui County needed a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to discharge wastewater into four groundwater injection wells from the county’s Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (LWRF).
