Federal Agencies Seek Academies’ Advice
On Using Emerging Toxicity, Exposure Data

A new National Academies committee could assist federal agencies by providing criteria to help determine when it is appropriate to use emerging types of toxicity and exposure data in regulatory decision-making, Robert Kavlock, the Environmental Protection Agency’s deputy assistant administrator for science, told committee members Jan. 26.

The EPA, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences asked the academies’ National Research Council to convene a committee to prepare a report, “Incorporating 21st Century Science into Risk-Based Evaluations.” ...
