Fears Rise That Calls for Climate Action May Fall Flat in Poland

The commitments countries made to cut fossil-fuel emissions under the Paris climate agreement won’t stop seas from swallowing some coastal cities, heat waves from becoming more deadly, or ice sheets from melting.

Only global action to begin swiftly and urgently decarbonizing the economy before 2030 can do that, according to the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report written for United Nations climate negotiators meeting in Poland in December.

That’s when the rules for how to turn the Paris accord into action are expected to be finalized.
