European Green Power Generation Set to Overtake Coal This Year

The share of renewable energy in power generation in Europe is poised to overtake coal this year as the continent seeks to reduce its reliance on the carbon-emitting fuel, according to a report commissioned by UBS AG.

Renewables now cover about a fifth of gross power generation in Europe as the annual growth rate of wind and solar capacity almost doubled during the last five years to 7 percent, wrote the report’s author, Aurora Energy Research Ltd. Conventional generation capacity on the continent have already started to shrink.
