Europe Moves Closer to Carbon Neutral Pledge

Plans to make the European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions net-zero by 2050 won the support of two European Parliament committees this week, giving the push momentum ahead of a members’ meeting in May.

If adopted, the net-zero goal would imply a rapid transformation of the EU economy. Electricity generation would largely switch to renewables, road transportation would electrify, and buildings would become carbon-neutral or even produce more energy than they consume, via technology like solar panels.
